Did You Know…

Sunshine makes some of us sad. Usually SAD, seasonal affective disorder, has been thought of as a winter ailment brought on by a lack of sunlight. About 5% of the population suffers from such winter light-deprived depression. But now researchers have found that 1% suffers from “summer SAD” or “summer depression” caused by what they experience as “unrelenting” sun. Whereas winter SAD sufferers sleep more, have less energy and gain weight and crave carbohydrates, summer SAD sufferers experience insomnia, anxiety and loss of appetite. These two ailments are not the flip side of the same coin, though, researches say, but antidepressants and lifestyle change may help. (LA Times, 5/28/07)
