What The Doctor Didn't Tell Me
For years, I have thought of gastrointestinal problems as my ‘family curse.’ My mother died of colon cancer at the age of 59. Before her, her father — my grandfather — also died of this affliction. Throughout my life, I experienced GI discomfort and flare-ups of various kinds, resulting in barium enemas and more colonoscopies than I care to remember. Several years ago I had a proctitus problem. I received treatment for lasting more than a year. Finally, I was released when, while the treatment had reduced it, the physician said it was incurable. Recognizing that I had susceptibility, beginning in my thirties, I began searching for ways of eating that would reduce my odds of falling victim to the family curse. Without naming the eating regimens I tried over the years, which I know benefit many other people, I continued to have one GI problem after another.
What I Discovered
Then one evening while at our next door neighbor's home, she mentioned she was trying a blood type diet. I had heard of it, but at her urging, read some material she had. What I read was intriguing — and what the heck — nothing else had worked. So I began eating according to my blood type, which is “B.” This meant avoiding foods that were among my favorites — chicken, corn-on-the-cob, seafood of all kinds, rye bread and even wheat bread. To make up for foods that were now “forbidden,” I tried eating things like lamb and bread made from spelt. What I quickly noticed was that I was no longer experiencing heartburn but I had a regularity that I had never known. This was reward in itself. Then in 2000 when I came out from a regularly scheduled colonoscopy, the doctor talked with me afterward. I asked about the proctitus and he told me there was no indication of it. While there is significant question about the theory and evidence supporting blood type diets, this regimen has worked for me.
